Ferrari has unveiled the new 296 Challenge racecar, which will debut on October 23. This ninth model in the Ferrari Challenge series is based on the 296 GTB and features extensive visual modifications while abandoning the hybrid system of the upgraded twin-turbo V6.

The 296 Challenge boasts a more aggressive stance compared to the road-going 296 GTB but is less extreme in appearance than the 296 GT3. It features a striking red and white livery and aerodynamic enhancements. The front of the car has a prominent splitter on the new bumper with larger intakes, hood vents, and wider fenders. The profile showcases deeper side skirts, Lexan windows, and 19-inch center-lock wheels with Pirelli tires designed specifically for the series. At the rear, the vehicle sports a massive wing, aerodynamic extensions on the sides, an F1-style brake light, and a black mesh housing the dual round tailpipes.

These changes enable the 296 Challenge to generate more than 870 kg (1,918 lbs) of downforce at 250 km/h (155 mph), which Ferrari describes as “unprecedented” in the history of the single-make series. The powertrain is derived from the 296 GTB, focusing exclusively on the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine. The racecar produces 690 hp (515 kW / 700 PS) from the combustion engine alone, representing a 36 hp (27 kW / 37 PS) increase compared to the stock model. As a result, it surpasses the power output of the non-electrified 296 GT3 racecar due to a lack of regulations in Ferrari’s single-make series. The model is equipped with CCM-R Plus brake discs and the ABS EVO Track system adapted for the track.

The 296 Challenge will officially debut during the Finali Mondiali at the Mugello Circuit from October 24 to 30 and will compete in the 2024 season of the European and North American series, replacing the 488 Challenge Evo.
