Hyundai’s unique EV, the Ioniq 6, shines in performance and efficiency

In the rapidly evolving world of electric vehicles (EVs), Hyundai stands out with its unique and captivating models, including the all-new Hyundai Ioniq 6. This midsize EV sets itself apart with a distinct design, combining efficiency and aesthetics reminiscent of 4-door coupes, such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS or Audi A7. While the coupe-like design reduces rear headroom, it delivers an appealing look that turns heads. Large 20-inch wheels further enhance its captivating aesthetics, while square matrix dots featured in various design elements add to its distinctive charm.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 inherits the successful all-wheel-drive EV platform from the Ioniq 5, albeit with a sleeker midsized sedan body. It boasts a total system output of 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, thanks to the instant torque provided by its dual motors. However, performance begins to taper at higher speeds. The default Normal drive mode offers a smooth power delivery, while the Eco mode conserves power but extends driving range.
The Ioniq 6 handles well, thanks to its low center of gravity. Regenerative settings, accessed through steering wheel paddles, enable one-pedal driving. Level 1 regeneration feels natural, while higher levels provide significant deceleration, with brake lights activating upon throttle release. Charging is swift with a 350kW DC fast charger, allowing 10% to 80% charge in 18 minutes. A level 2 charger with 40 amps charges from 10% to 100% in just over 7 hours.
Efficiency is a highlight for the Ioniq 6, with around 114 MPGe in the city and approximately 97.7 MPGe on the highway, surpassing EPA estimates. Its 77.4 kWh battery pack offers ample range, and the vehicle excels in fast charging with a 350kW charger. The cabin features a user-friendly 12.3-inch dual-screen setup for infotainment and includes multi-color LED ambient lighting and well-placed soft-touch surfaces. However, wireless smartphone integration remains absent. The spacious front seats offer extensive adjustability, but rear headroom may be limiting due to the sloping roofline. The Ioniq 6 is also equipped with essential safety features, earning the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.
Pricing for the Hyundai Ioniq 6 starts at $41,600 for the base RWD SE Standard Range model, with higher trims offering additional features. The top-trim Ioniq 6 Limited AWD model, including optional features, is priced at $58,425.
