Mitsubishi Fuso Readies Prototype for Japan Mobility Show 2023, Offering a Glimpse of Future Design.

Mitsubishi Fuso, owned by Daimler, is set to reveal a prototype of its new-generation Super Great heavy-duty truck at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 on October 25. Teasing the upcoming model’s futuristic design, the truck manufacturer is preparing to showcase a significant departure from the styling of its predecessor.

The Mitsubishi Fuso Super Great, introduced as the company’s flagship model in 1996, saw the current generation debut in 2017 and was updated with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in 2021. While the teaser images are intentionally dark, they offer a glimpse of a sleeker and lower-positioned LED headlight design, along with a cleaner grille that spans the entire width of the cab. The Fuso lettering is integrated into black trim, and the Mitsubishi emblem sits above it. The windshield and asymmetric mirrors appear similar to the outgoing Super Great, while the aerodynamic roof extension seems to have been redesigned for better integration with the rest of the body.

While details on the powertrains are currently unavailable, the existing model in Japan offers two engine options: the 7.7-liter 6S10 engine producing 376 hp and the 10.7-liter 6R20 engine with 454 hp, both featuring turbochargers, intercoolers, and a Stop&Start system.

It was announced earlier this year that Daimler’s Mitsubishi Fuso Truck would merge with Toyota’s Hino Motors. The two companies plan to unite their efforts in commercial vehicle development, procurement, and production, with the deal set to be finalized by the end of 2024. Further details about the name and corporate structure of the new entity will be revealed closer to the merger date.
