Ford Shelves Explorer Hybrid for 2024 to Focus on Specialized Markets, While Eyeing Future Electric SUVs
Ford has officially announced that there will be no 2024 Explorer Hybrid model, redirecting hybrid capacity to meet the strong demand for the Ford Police Interceptor Utility hybrid and other Ford hybrid vehicles. Mike Levine, Ford’s product communications director, clarified that the 2024 Explorer will solely feature the fuel-efficient 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost and the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engines, which collectively dominate Explorer sales.
Strategic Shift: The decision to omit the Explorer Hybrid for 2024 aligns with Ford’s strategic focus on meeting the high demand for its Police Interceptor Utility hybrid vehicles.
Consumer Insights: Observations from Ford’s vehicle build tool and consumer-side 2024 information had hinted at the Explorer Hybrid’s potential absence from the lineup.
Previous Explorer Hybrid: Introduced in 2020, the Explorer Hybrid combined a 44-hp electric motor with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine, delivering a total of 318 hp. The hybrid variant was initially designed for police duty, offering enhanced power for law enforcement equipment.
Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring: In addition to the Explorer, the 2024 Lincoln Aviator will also skip its Grand Touring plug-in hybrid grade, indicating a broader shift in Ford’s electrified offerings.
Performance vs. Efficiency: The Explorer Hybrid prioritized hauling and towing capabilities over high fuel efficiency, setting it apart from models like the Toyota Highlander. Reviews highlighted its rough transitions at low speeds but smoother performance under load.
Ford F-150 Hybrid Influence: A similar hybrid system is utilized in the Ford F-150, known as Powerboost, which boasts improved drivability and smoothness, generating a total of 430 hp.
Future Electric SUVs: Ford has teased plans for an upcoming electric seven-passenger SUV expected to launch in 2025. The vehicle aims for a 300-mile range at 70 mph, featuring a battery capacity of approximately 100 kWh.
While the 2024 Explorer Hybrid will be absent from Ford’s lineup, the company remains committed to diversifying its electrified offerings. By prioritizing specialized markets such as police duty vehicles, Ford aims to optimize its hybrid capacities and prepare for the anticipated launch of new electric SUVs in the coming years.
