AlphaTauri Aims to Rectify Early Season Struggles with Key Suspension Upgrade
The AlphaTauri Formula 1 team has acknowledged an “error” in its approach to suspension development for the AT04 and plans to address it for the 2024 season. The team initially opted to develop its own suspension for the AT04, but a challenging start to the season led to a mid-year upgrade, incorporating Red Bull’s rear suspension. AlphaTauri CEO Peter Bayer admits the decision to go their “own way” with critical suspension parts was a mistake, and the team plans to implement Red Bull’s suspension design for the upcoming season.
Bayer revealed that AlphaTauri recognized the significance of the suspension, especially with the new regulation changes and the importance of the floor-suspension interaction in the aerodynamics of the car. While the decision to use Red Bull’s suspension was delayed, the team aims to rectify the situation for 2024.
While acknowledging potential gains from attempting to outsmart the parent company, Bayer also highlighted the challenges of ensuring compatibility with in-house developments. Technical Director Jody Egginton emphasized the team’s efforts to understand the global concept and praised the breakthrough made by his team in optimizing the suspension.
Earlier in the year, amid rumors of a possible sale, AlphaTauri announced plans to maximize synergies with Red Bull as permitted by regulations. The closer collaboration is evident in the decision to use Red Bull’s front suspension design on the AT04 for the 2024 season, aiming to address past challenges and improve overall performance.
As AlphaTauri looks to the future, the acknowledgment of errors and the strategic decision to leverage Red Bull’s expertise reflects the team’s commitment to continuous improvement and competitiveness in the Formula 1 arena.
