The Only Hardtop Among Seven Bertone-Styled DB2/4s Commands Record Price
An exceptional Aston Martin DB2/4 Coupe, exclusively styled by Bertone and one of only seven ever produced, has been successfully auctioned at RM Sotheby’s in New York, fetching over a million dollars. Commissioned by Stanley H. “Wacky” Arnolt II in 1954, this particular DB2/4 stands as the sole hardtop version among the seven Bertone-bodied DB2/4 two-doors, making it an unparalleled masterpiece.
Unique Features and History:
Distinguished by its wraparound rear window, a signature design element by Bertone’s Franco Scaglione, this DB2/4 bears the chassis number LML/765. Notably, it is the only one equipped with a hardtop, while the others were designed as roadsters. Originally delivered to “Monsieur Henrey Pagezy” of Paris in 1955, it is believed that the owner’s name is misspelled, with Henri Pigozzi, the founder of SIMCA, being the actual owner. This is evidenced by the taillights borrowed from SIMCA automobiles.
Restoration and Pristine State:
California-based Kevin Kay Restorations, specializing in Aston Martin, led a comprehensive concours restoration of this unique DB2/4. The meticulous restoration, valued at $800,000, included a “show stand-correct” metallic blue repaint and the fabrication of various components such as the front bumper, taillights, bonnet trim, sun visors, and interior trim hardware to replicate the original. The restoration was completed in time for the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours.
